a rebellious little list of good things
When you write a book called Radiant Rebellion, especially one that encourages folks to rebel against the sorts of things that society wants you to believe, or the way in which society wants you to behave, you find yourself spending an inordinate amount of time searching for folks who do exactly that. Here are a few I found this week who have charmed the pants off me:
• Talk about rebelling radiantly — Lizzo, man. Did you see her rebellious acceptance speech when she received the People’s Champion Award at the People’s Choice Awards? Girlfriend is made of light.
• JR is one of my favourite artists, and this week, hundreds of folks joined him to create a collaborate portrait in protest to Iran’s treatment of its women. Beautiful.
• Activist Greta Thunberg has written a book. It’s not out until Valentine’s Day, but I’ve already preordered my copy.
• Artist Victoria Ryan just won the Turner Prize. "At the age of 66, Ryan is the oldest person to ever win the Turner Prize. She was born before most of the previous winners of the prize, including the 1993 winner Rachel Whiteread. Between 1991 and 2016 only artists under 50 were eligible, but now there is no age limit."
• And finally, just because no one ever talks about this: how not to get murdered in a quaint English village. Marcus is from one of these quaint villages, and I can attest that every one of the statements in that article is fact.
Some joy in a good week.
