We woke up to some hopeful news: while Hurricane Laura intensified to a Category 3 storm last night, it looks like Houston is going to escape the worst of it. We might get a gnarly thunderstorm or two, and wind gusts might knock power out, but not much more. We've decided there's no reason to evacuate. For now, I'm just spending the day in Marcus' favourite armchair, writing and keeping a lookout for any inclement weather headed our way.

That said, please keep the folks at the Texas/Louisiana border in your prayers -- they're in for an intense 36 hours. Also, folks on the "dirty" side of the storm might also in for a rough time (the east side of a hurricane always fares far worse than the west side -- for comparison, in Hurricane Harvey, at landfall we were 200 miles east from the eye of the storm and, well, you know how THAT turned out). So poor, battered New Orleans might get a bit of a walloping as well.

This has been a helluva year, hasn’t it?
